Fathers' Rights in Long Island

What are my rights?

Although in the past courts tended to favor the mother in matters regarding children, this has changed along with the social changes which have occurred regarding the family unit.  Whereas the mother was more traditionally the parent who stayed home with the children while the father went to work, this is now far from a given.  Both parents may work and spend equal time with the children or the father may be the stay-at-home parent who is more actively involved in raising the children.  While there is no wish to take any rights away from the mother, it is important that fathers receive equal rights.

When the court is making decisions to do with the children of a marriage, it must give equal treatment to the father.  A Long Island divorce lawyer can work to see that this occurs and that your case is presented in such a way as to gain the consideration it deserves.  A court will always operate per the best interests of the child and usually recognizes that having both parents involved in raising the child is preferable in most cases.  Your rights, however, do not only extend to custody but also to child support, spousal support, and any legal matter which affects you as a father.
